News Websites and Resources for Kids
Children need to be aware of current news as well as adults, but how can you make sure they're getting their news from reliable and safe sources? There are some sites out there that are tailored to delivering informative news and discussions to kids. Through current events, you can not only inform your child but also help them develop thoughts and opinions of their own.
The Best Kids News Sites
-
Here, There, Everywhere. A site for kids ages seven and above, this is designed to give kids a general overview of light, entertaining, and informative news. If you want to acclimate your children to checking current events, this can be a good site for discussion.
-
Times for Kids. Times has a section for kids that covers general and global events, designed to spark interest in things going on in the world. Some of these pieces are written by other children, which makes it uniquely effective.
-
CNN Student News. If you want to get your children interested in regular news coverage, a good introduction may be CNN Student News. This is intended for children ages 11 and older, and the news is curated and created by educators and journalists.
-
Nick News. Nickelodeon still runs its own news site, which has been hosted since 1992. This is inspired by the original television platform in which Linda Ellerbee discussed news events with an audience of children, ensuring that they both understood events and felt free to discuss their personal opinions.
-
Scholastic News Online. The famous book distributor also maintains a news site, focused on bringing news to children as young as five and up. You can view this news with your child or read it aloud.
Always Remember to Discuss
At the end of the day, ask your children what they learned about current events. What message or meaning did they take from this? This gives you a chance to bond with your child, impart some of your opinions, and help them grow as an independent, opinionated person. If you find they have serious misconceptions or that they seem to be generally mistaken about some events, you can ask them which website they visited and figure out whether the information may have been misrepresented to them.
Socially conscious and aware children become socially conscious and aware adults. By making it so they can easily get information about current events, you can help them form their own opinions and become their own person. That also applies to information about their own medical care, such as dentistry and other procedures. For more information, continue to follow us at Wright Smiles Pediatric Dentistry.
